In line with the initiative “Zero accident Kumari,” Kanniyakumari district police have launched “Kaaval AI,” an AI-based traffic violation detection system at 10 locations across the district on Wednesday.This AI-based traffic monitoring system was initially launched at Kanniyakumari district collectorate roundabout last month. The system included installation of AI cameras at four approaches to the roundabout, to monitor traffic violations with high accuracy. Under the system, the registration numbers of the vehicles committing traffic violations are displayed instantly on a digital screen and penalties are granted automatically based on the nature of the offence.The initiative has been well received among the public and 4,868 cases have been detected and penalties have been imposed, since the installation of the system.During the launch event held in Vadasery, Kanniyakumari District Superintendent of Police R. Stalin said that following the installation of the “Kaaval AI” system at district collectorate roundabout, helmet usage has increased among the public. He added that the objective of the initiative is to promote helmet use as a behavioural change, as every year around 350 people die in road accidents in Kanniyakumari district, of whom 75% die due to not wearing helmets.“In the third phase, cameras will be installed at locations with a high accident rate,” Mr. Stalin said.The AI cameras with digital boards have now been installed at Vadasery, APPTA market, Parvathipuram, Chettikulam, Anjugramam, Vivekanandapuram, Karungal, Azhagiymandapam, Thiruthuvapuram and Thuckalay.At the event, Mr. Stalin distributed certificates to students and other contributors in recognition of their role in their successful implementation of the project.
