The State government has sanctioned ₹20 crore for the installation of AI-based cameras across Mangaluru (erstwhile Ullal) Assembly constituency for traffic enforcement and crime investigation, said Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader, who represents the constituency, in Mangaluru on Monday.Talking to reporters, Mr. Khader said the cameras will be installed at prominent places in the constituency and also at the entry points from Kerala to Mangaluru city.Closed circuit television cameras will be installed in interior places of the constituency.These cameras will be used mainly for traffic enforcement. Presently, the AI-based cameras, which were installed by Mangaluru Smart City Limited, do not cover Ullal, Deralakatte and other neighbouring areas. These AI-based cameras will be of use for crime investigation.Mr. Khader said the proposal was submitted, in consultation with Mangaluru City police, to the government which approved it a few days ago.Under the project, it was proposed to build a separate command centre for witnessing and acting on the feed of the cameras. The Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation will be executing the project.Private educational institutions in the area will be tasked with maintaining these cameras and also pay salaries for the personnel employed at the command centre, Mr. Khader said.
