In an effort to achieve ‘Zero Accident Kumari,’ Kanniyakumari police had recently launched “Kaaval AI-Automatic Traffic Violation Detection System,” on a pilot basis at the roundabout near the district Collectorate, which falls under Nagercoil subdivision. As part of the initiative, four AI powered cameras have been installed at four approaches to the roundabout. The system automatically detects motorists riding two-wheelers without helmets, and displays the vehicle number on a newly installed digital board, near the roundabout. Subsequently penalty notices are sent to the registered mobile numbers of the vehicle owners. It is noted that this the first AI based traffic violation detection system in the State, which has been introduced with the aim of reducing traffic violations.According to police sources, from the launch of the system on Tuesday (June 9) until Thursday noon, around 900 two wheelers riders had been fined for failing to wear helmets.Speaking to The Hindu, Kanniyakumari District Superintendent of Police R. Stalin said that 75% of fatal road accidents in the district are linked to the non-use of helmets. He added that the system has been launched to reduce traffic violations, fatal accidents and to create awareness among the public.“The system is highly cost effective, with the cameras costing between ₹15,000 to ₹20,000, excluding the cost of digital screen. The ‘Kaaval AI’ application was developed by the students of Rajalakshmi Engineering College, and the idea stemmed from their participation in a hackathon,” he added. He further noted that following the study of the pilot project and its effectiveness, the system would be implemented at other subdivisions, including important junctions and accident prone locations. With its wider implementation, additional features such as detection of overspeeding and rash driving will also be incorporated into the AI based system, he noted.
