Public concern is mounting in Kanniyakumari district over the alarming rise in underage riders, many of whom engage in rash driving, with several incidents ending in tragedy.

According to an official statement from the Kanniyakumari District Police, six individuals have lost their lives in road accidents that happened in the past two months with some being underage riders, while others were college students.

Abilash, a truck driver from Kottar, says there has been a sharp increase in school students riding two wheelers during holidays. “Most of these children ride without helmets and indulge in dangerous stunts. Even in heavily congested areas like Kottar, they perform risky manoeuvres simply to attract attention,” he said.

He added that the situation is far worse in the outskirts and peri-urban areas, where there is little to no regulation or monitoring. “The careless behavior not only puts their own lives at risk but also endangers motorists who follow traffic rules,” he cautioned.
