His predecessor, an Orban ally, was forced to step down in July
Hungary’s ruling party on Saturday said it has chosen a former supreme court judge who was fired by former premier Viktor Orban as its pick to be the country’s next president.
The parliamentary group of Tisza, led by new pro-EU Prime Minister Peter Magyar, said it has nominated Andras Baka as its choice for the largely ceremonial role of head of state.
Hungary’s single-chamber parliament will on Tuesday designate the successor to Tamas Sulyok, an Orban ally who had to step down on 19 July after lawmakers passed a constitutional amendment truncating his term.
Baka was removed from Hungary’s supreme court in 2012 after he condemned a move under Orban to reduce the age of mandatory retirement for judges from 70 to 62, calling it a judicial purge.
