CALASIAO, PANGASINAN, Philippines — Agricultural losses in La Union have reached P11.1 million after Tropical Depressions Luis and Maymay, along with the southwest monsoon (“habagat”), battered the province with days of heavy rains and flooding.
The damage affected 472 hectares of agricultural land planted with rice and high-value crops, as well as fish farms in the municipalities of Agoo, Bauang, Pugo, Bagulin, Naguilian and San Gabriel, according to the provincial government.
Initial assessments showed that vegetable crops suffered the heaviest losses at P7.55 million, followed by fruit crops at P2.03 million. Damage to rice crops was estimated at P947,846, while fishery losses reached P295,110.
Authorities also reported P300,000 worth of damage to irrigation facilities and P2,600 in losses to root crops.
