As South Africa celebrates Women’s Month, advocates stress that support can begin with listening, believing survivors and ensuring women facing abuse have safe spaces to seek help.
Women’s Month is often a time to celebrate the resilience, achievements and contributions of women who make a difference in their homes, workplaces and communities every day.
But beyond the celebrations, it is also an opportunity to reflect on the importance of ensuring women have access to support, understanding and safe spaces when life becomes difficult.
For many women, that support can begin with something simple - a friend who checks in, a family member who listens without judgement or someone who reminds them they do not have to face their struggles alone.
For women experiencing gender-based violence, however, asking for help is often far more complicated.
