Iceland’s government backs a Yes vote but warned that foreign interference will not be tolerated
Icelandic authorities have asked the European Commission not to intervene in the country’s upcoming referendum on continued EU talks, two EU officials have told Euractiv.
On 29 August, Icelanders head to the voting booths to decide whether the island nation should continue its long-stalled negotiations on potential EU membership.
Although Iceland’s government is campaigning for a Yes vote, it appears to believe the cause is best served with Brussels keeping its distance.
Both Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir and foreign minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir have said the question is for Icelanders only to decide.
