THE big news as far as the South African Football Association (Safa) is concerned is the upcoming announcement of a new Bafana Bafana coach, set for Saturday, 8 August, but switching to more mundane matters, the association's presidential race is also gaining momentum.
Bafana have been without a coach since Hugo Broos' five-year reign came to an end on 31 July. After Broos guided Bafana to a historic World Cup knockout-stage run, South African football fans will be expecting nothing less than winning the 2027 AFCON from the incoming coach.
The qualifiers for the continental showpiece begin in fewer than 60 days, on 21 September, with South Africa expected to cruise against co-hosts Kenya, Guinea and minnows Eritrea.
The name of Pitso Mosimane remains at the top of the list, while rumours regarding Frenchman Hervé Renard were quashed on Wednesday when it was revealed he has returned to the Ivory Coast hot seat.
