Greece was one of nine states in the Eurocontrol area that set records in daily arrivals and departures in the week from July 27 to August 2, Eurocontrol’s Flash Report says.
The publication does not give a breakdown by country, but indicates that Greece’s previous record was set in earlier July.
In fact, a search shows that on July 18, Greek air traffic controllers handled a record 5,082 arrivals, departures and overflights in the area they monitor.
The other eight countries that posted all-time records were Ireland, Moldova, Montenegro, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain and Turkey.
These records are not just a peak tourism season phenomenon but reflect, in part, a wider rising trend in the Eastern Mediterranean, despite the fact that the region has been affected by the crisis in the Middle East, which has led many airlines to revise their schedules.
