With illegal posters and wall writings continuing to deface public spaces despite repeated enforcement measures, the Tiruchi City Corporation has intensified its efforts by painting awareness messages and graffiti on walls across the city to discourage rampant poster culture.Several public spots, including walls along Tiruchi-Chennai Bypass near Senthaneerpuram and buildings around Central Bus Stand, Chathiram Bus Stand, Cantonment, Palakarai, TVS Tollgate, Thillai Nagar and Woraiyur, are covered with posters.As a solution, the civic body erected additional billboards in 2022 at vantage points in every zone, providing advertisers, organisations and political parties with designated spaces to display posters. At present, 25 such authorised locations are available across the city.However, unauthorised posters continue to appear, particularly during political meetings, movie releases, festivals and other functions, leaving several public walls disfigured.Now, to discourage such practices, the Corporation has painted awareness messages highlighting the four-bin waste segregation system introduced under the new solid waste management rules. Images of the National Flag and other civic awareness messages have also been created with the expectation that people would refrain from pasting posters over them.Awareness paintings have been completed on walls along Thanjavur Road, TVS Tollgate, College Road, Anna Salai, Students Road and near the District Collectorate.“We are planning to expand the initiative to major roads and other prominent locations where defacement is rampant. Besides preventing indiscriminate poster pasting, these paintings could also discourage people from dumping garbage near the walls,” a Corporation official said.
