Tiruchi Corporation has stepped up efforts to ensure effective segregation of solid waste at source across residential and commercial establishments as part of its efforts to improve sanitation.The Corporation has outsourced the collection, segregation, transportation, and processing of waste generated in all 65 wards in the city to a private agency. On an average, the city generates about 470 tonnes of waste daily. About 70% of the garbage is segregated at source, according to officials.Households, shops, hotels, offices, and other institutions have been instructed to segregate waste into wet waste, dry waste, sanitation waste, and special-care waste categories before handing it over to sanitation workers.Wet waste, including kitchen and food waste, is to be composted, while dry waste such as plastic, paper, metal and glass will be sent to the upcoming Automated Material Recovery Facility at Ariyamangalam for recycling. Sanitation waste includes used diapers and sanitary pads while special-care waste covers items such as paint cans, bulbs, mercury thermometers and medicines.According to officials, sanitary inspectors have been directed to conduct regular inspections to monitor compliance. Commercial establishments, institutions, and hospitals generating large volumes of waste have been advised to install separate bins and ensure proper disposal practices. The civic body has warned that repeated violations could attract penalties under the Solid Waste Management Rules.It is said that source segregation has shown steady improvement following the establishment of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (RRR) centres that encourage residents to hand over recyclable materials separately.“Waste segregation practices are comparatively better in apartment complexes while households in economically weaker neighbourhoods and several commercial areas continue to lag behind,” said a senior official.Special awareness campaigns are planned across the city to educate residents on the importance of source segregation.
