In an effort to improve sanitation, the Tiruchi Corporation has identified about 120 garbage-vulnerable points across the city for transformation into green spaces. These locations, which have long served as informal garbage dumps, will be redeveloped with greenery to prevent littering and urination while also creating cleaner and aesthetic public spaces. By turning the garbage-prone spots into mini-green zones, the civic body aims at curbing waste accumulation and improve air quality.Since September 2023, 61 garbage hotspots in both residential and commercial areas across all five zones have been reclaimed and transformed into green spaces. Of these, 10 spots are in Zone I, 11 in Zone II, four in Zone III, nine in Zone IV, and 27 in Zone V.The initiative is being implemented by the private agency that manages the city’s waste collection. Sanitation workers clear the accumulated waste dumped in these spots. Many of the reclaimed areas are under flyovers, along walkways, and around transformer enclosures. To promote recycling and reuse, discarded items from waste have been creatively repurposed for beautification. Ceramic toilet closets and broken pots have been turned into planters for flowering and ornamental plants while tyres had been used as reusable flower pots. Depending on the available space, some sites have been developed into mini gardens, and fenced off to safeguard the greenery.Recently, a garbage hotspot at Shanmuga Nagar in Ward No. 25 has been transformed into a beauty spot with murals and a rock structure. At present, work on beautifying two hotspots near TVS Tollgate Service Road and Rockfort is under way and is expected to be completed within a week, a Corporation official said. The beautified spots are monitored round the clock to make the transformation effective. The officials have decided to penalise violators to safeguard the reclaimed space. Published - September 18, 2025 07:01 pm IST
