Tirunagar, which comprises two wards - 94 and 95, has always been known for its well-planned layout. Of late, the area is seeing a large-scale dumping of garbage, non-functioning street lights and crumbling infrastructure.

On the one hand, fingers are being pointed at residents of Joseph Nagar, Mathithoppu and Mahalakshmi Nagar, who litter the roadsides with waste, creating an unhygienic environment that increases the risk of various diseases, while on the other hand, less number of sanitation staff has compounded the problem.

Shankar, a resident, says that although there is a plenty of waste bins available in the area, people often throw trash on the ground.

“There is a lack of awareness among people, and one can see them throwing waste even in areas marked with ‘Do not litter’ signs, particularly in Mathithoppu area,” he points out.

Earlier, Mathithoppu area is filled with garbage, only after a lot of struggle, waste has been removed to some extent by authorities, he added.
