Residents have expressed concern over the piling up of garbage in the spaces below bridges in Tiruchi, that are a poor reflection of cleanliness standards in the city. These spaces have often been shortlisted for redevelopment by the Corporation authorities, but nothing concrete has been implemented so far, said activists.“The best option would be for the local administration to get local businesses to sponsor the landscaping and maintenance of these spaces, so that they can improve the general appearance of Tiruchi. At present, the spaces below the bridges across the city are being used as dumping grounds for old vehicles and construction site debris. Informal market stalls, garbage sorting yards and even playgrounds are being set up under the bridges with little concern for safety. Corporate sponsors could help to neaten up these areas, by adopting individual spots and maintaining them throughout the year,” C. Balasubramanian, adviser, Tiruchi district Exnora, told The Hindu.A recent survey conducted as part of the State-wide ‘Thoomai Mission’ by the Corporation identified 124 garbage vulnerable points across Tiruchi’s five zones. The spaces below bridges in Palakkarai, Edamalaipatti Pudur and Thennur, have become eyesores due to the rampant dumping of solid waste here.“These spaces could become ideal spots for city residents to visit, if they are laid out and maintained as open-plan shopping centres or children’s parks with adequate parking facilities. The fencing and railings at the spots should be repaired to prevent people from misusing them,” said civic activist K.C. Neelamegam. Published - June 09, 2026 07:07 pm IST
