Community leaders in Phoenix have joined the call for greater accountability at the Phoenix SAPS, saying the area has been infiltrated by drug-related activity and violent crime.

Moulana Mohamed Tariq, chairperson of the Phoenix Crisis Center and the Phoenix Spiritual Crime Prevention Forum, said where there are allegations of misconduct, negligence or corruption, these matters must be properly investigated and dealt with through the appropriate processes.
“Accountability should not be viewed as an attack on the police. It is about strengthening SAPS, restoring public confidence and ensuring that officers and communities alike know that the law applies equally to everyone.
“We therefore support any lawful and transparent process aimed at identifying weaknesses, addressing wrongdoing and improving policing in Phoenix,” said Tariq.
