Phoenix residents complain about traffic congestion on a daily basis. The eThekwini Municipality said budgets for road works have been earmarked for 2028 and 2029.
Veteran Phoenix community activist Sham Maharaj has expressed concern about the lack of road upgrades and municipal budgets to alleviate daily traffic congestion in the suburb.
Maharaj said that bumper-to-bumper traffic is a daily occurrence in Phoenix, with little or no major roadwork projects being undertaken there. He said road rage and motorists driving counterflow and along pavements have become the norm during peak hour.
DA Councillor Lyndal Singh also brought up the matter at a council meeting in July 2026. During traffic assessments, she identified five intersections in Phoenix with bottlenecks.
The municipality stated that designs were completed for the JG Champion Drive between R102 and Viewhaven Drive; however, an environmental impact assessment must be conducted.
