The Northern District Community Forum (NDCF) has launched a petition urging Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis to halt further development approvals in the Brackenfell Boulevard and Vredekloof corridor until major road infrastructure upgrades are implemented.

The petition relates to the proposed development at 41 Charles Drive and calls for an immediate moratorium on new subdivision, rezoning and intensive land-use approvals within the Brackenfell Boulevard, Vredekloof and De Bron catchment area until a comprehensive traffic impact assessment has been completed.

Petitioners also want funding for the dualling of Brackenfell Boulevard to be allocated before any further developments are approved.

According to the petition, a transport and community impact survey involving 4 280 motorists, residents and business owners found that 78.1% of respondents described congestion at the Brackenfell Boulevard bridge as serious or extremely serious.

It also found that 94% believe no further development should be approved until the bridge over the N1 is widened to two lanes in each direction.
