Coast Guards in the central Aegean Sea have intercepted and taken to a safe mooring a speedboat found ploughing unoccupied and at high speed through waters between the islands of Syros and Kythnos, authorities said Tuesday.
A Coast Guard statement said the man at the speedboat’s helm fell into the sea Monday while the vessel continued on its course unchecked. The 60-year-old Greek was picked up from the water unharmed by a passing Italian sailing yacht and taken to Kythnos, which is in the Cyclades chain of islands.
The speedboat was located near the bay of Foinikas in southern Syros, where it was stopped and towed to the nearest marina.
On Sunday, a sailboat was found drifting and empty off the island of Symi in the southeastern Aegean. Seven of its eight German passengers and crew were picked up out of the water, while a search is still under way for the eighth.
