A Hellenic Coast Guard vessel continued on Tuesday the search to locate and rescue the eighth passenger of a sailing boat, who went missing after falling into the water on Sunday off the coast of Symi.
Seven other passengers on the boat were either rescued or made it to shore.
The incident occurred on Sunday night (August 2), when the sailing boat’s eight passengers, four men and four women, ended up in the water in circumstances that have yet to be fully clarified. Based on the evidence given so far, all eight had jumped into the water to swim and the sailboat had drifted away, swept by currents, making it impossible for them to get back on.
A search-and-rescue operation was mounted by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre of the Hellenic Coast Guard, during which seven of the eight passengers were discovered. Two managed to swim to shore unaided and reach the Panormitis Bay.
