Amid an unprecedented campaign to stop drink-driving on Greek roads, authorities on a western island have arrested a yacht skipper for alleged drunkenness in charge of his vessel, officials said Tuesday.

The Coast Guard said the 46-year-old Slovenian national was arrested late Monday just after bringing his sailing yacht into the port of Argostoli on Kefalonia, when he was subjected to and failed a breathalyser test.

Under Greek marine law, a captain or crew member of a vessel found to be drunk while on duty faces a maximum sentence of six months in prison.

On land, traffic police have for months kept up a rigorous, and highly successful, campaign to eradicate drink-driving, following last year’s highway code reform that introduced much tougher fines and other penalties for offenders.
