The gap between products and business goals

Product management often celebrates products that customers love. Experience has taught me that this is only half the story. A product can address genuine customer needs, generate positive feedback and inspire loyalty, but its true success lies in its ability to create lasting value for both the customer and the business. Sustainable products are built where user needs and business strategy converge.

Throughout my experience working with product teams, I have seen how easy it is for organisations to create a disconnect between what products are building and what the business is trying to achieve. Product teams may become focused on delivering features, improving user experiences, and meeting customer requests, while leadership is focused on broader goals like growth, revenue, market expansion, and long-term competitiveness.

Both perspectives are important. The challenge is making sure they move in the same direction.

I have learned that product strategy is not simply about creating a list of features or planning the next release. It is about understanding where the organisation wants to go and determining how the product can help make that vision a reality.
