A 62-year-old pensioner from Manenberg narrowly escaped serious injury after tumbling down a one-storey staircase, which had been left dangerously unsafe by council workers who had loosened the guardrails during maintenance.
Valerie Philander had called the City of Cape Town numerous times to come and fix the old handrail along the stairs to her council-owned flat at 7D Seine Road.
They arrived on Friday and got to work while Philander, 62, saw to her 92-year-old wheelchair-bound mother.
But after grinding off the bolts and loosening the railing, the workers left.
