AIRLIFT: Injured man rescued

A 60-YEAR-OLD hiker survived a 40-metre fall from the Second Waterfall hiking trail in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve near Stellenbosch.

According to Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR), the man was part of a group hiking the popular trail on Thursday when he reportedly stepped awkwardly, slipped and plunged down steep terrain alongside the path.

His fellow hikers immediately moved to an area with cellphone reception and contacted emergency services.

A small rescue team, including a Western Cape Government Health and Wellness Emergency Medical Services (EMS) paramedic, was flown directly to the scene to assess and stabilise the injured hiker.
