A small rescue team, including an EMS paramedic, was flown directly to the scene to assess and stabilise the injured hiker.

A 60-year-old hiker was airlifted to safety after falling approximately 40 metres from a popular hiking trail in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, prompting a complex six-and-a-half-hour rescue operation involving both aerial and ground teams.

According to Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) Western Cape, the man was trekking with a group when he "stepped awkwardly, slipped, and fell down steep terrain."

His companions quickly sought mobile phone reception and contacted emergency services.

"A small rescue team, including a Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS paramedic, was flown directly to the scene to assess and stabilise the injured hiker," WSAR said.
