WSAR rescuers and emergency personnel conduct a complex rescue operation after a 60-year-old hiker fell approximately 40 metres from the Second Waterfall trail in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve near Stellenbosch on Thursday.

A 60-year-old hiker has been airlifted to safety after falling about 40 metres from the Second Waterfall hiking trail in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve near Stellenbosch on Thursday morning, June 18.

According to Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR), the man was part of a group hiking the popular trail when he reportedly stepped awkwardly, slipped and plunged down steep terrain alongside the path.

His fellow hikers immediately moved to an area with cellphone reception and contacted emergency services.

A small rescue team, including a Western Cape Government Health and Wellness Emergency Medical Services (EMS) paramedic, was flown directly to the scene to assess and stabilise the injured hiker. At the same time, additional WSAR rescuers, assisted by a CapeNature work party, hiked into the area carrying specialised technical rescue equipment and a stretcher.
