GAFAMORG stressed that education is not a privilege but "a fundamental human right and the foundation upon which every just, democratic and prosperous nation is built."
The Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Organization (GAFAMORG) has condemned the Nigerian government’s failure in education, declaring that every day Nigerian students remain out of school is "a national tragedy."
The group threw its weight behind the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other democratic groups, accusing the Nigerian government of failing to prioritise education and calling for urgent action to restore academic activities in public tertiary institutions.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by its Chairman, Babatunde Agunbiade, and its Governing Council Public Relations Officer, Ade-Adewunmi Adeoye, GAFAMORG applauded the labour movement, academics and civil society organisations for their unwavering defence of public education and the future of Nigerian children.
The group particularly commended the leadership of the NLC Lagos State Council under Comrade Agnes Funmi Sessi for standing in solidarity with ASUU and advocating the return of students to classrooms through dialogue, improved welfare for education workers and increased funding for the education sector.
