Traffic restrictions were imposed Friday in the Haidari area of western Athens after a large wildfire broke out on Mount Poikilo, prompting authorities to close sections of major roads, including parts of Athinon Avenue and the Aigaleo Ring Road.

Police urged motorists to avoid the area and follow diversion routes as firefighting operations continued.

According to state broadcaster ERT, authorities were also on standby to evacuate the nearby Dafni Psychiatric Hospital if conditions deteriorated.

Explosions were heard from the mountain area, reportedly involving power grid infrastructure within the forested area, ERT reported.

Fire crews continue to battle the region’s blaze under difficult conditions as authorities monitor its progress.
