KwaZulu-Natal authorities have activated emergency response measures as the province braces for severe weather linked to a cut-off low-pressure system.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an Orange Level 6 warning for disruptive rainfall expected to cause flooding of bridges, roads and settlements, as well as damage to property and infrastructure along the coast and adjacent interior between East London in the Eastern Cape and Cape Vidal in KwaZulu-Natal.
In response to the latest weather forecast, the provincial government said it has engaged the heads of the departments of Transport and Human Settlements to ensure teams respond swiftly to the expected adverse conditions.
As part of the province's standard snowfall response plan, road graders will work with Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) teams to clear snow.
"Graders to remove it before it could accumulate to above 30cm. More than 170 rooms have been made available at Montclair Lodge to accommodate destitute families. Department teams will respond with agility to severe weather patterns," MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma said.
