The DA has set its sights on governing seven municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal after the November local government elections.
In a media briefing on Tuesday, where the provincial leadership welcomed two sitting ANC councillors from the eThekwini Municipality, the party announced that it would retain uMngeni Local Municipality with an increased majority. The DA scooped the Howick-based municipality from the ANC s for the first time in 2021.
Announcing the target, the DA's provincial chairperson Dean Macpherson said retaining uMngeni is the party’s top priority with eThekwini following closely on the party’s radar. The party also wants to govern Greater KwaDukuza Municipality in the town formerly known as Stanger. Other municipalities that are considered strategic are uMhlathuze in Richards Bay, Msunduzi in Pietermaritzburg, uMdoni in Scottburgh on the south coast as well as Ray Nkonyeni on the lower south coast.
“These are the municipalities we are targeting, however, our prediction is that the DA will be a decider in all municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal after the November 4 elections,” said Macpherson.
