Traders on prediction market platforms Polymarket and Myriad have pushed the implied probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike at this week’s FOMC meeting to 27%, with the odds rising by double digits in just 24 hours. The shift reflects growing unease among market participants that the Fed might not be done tightening, despite broad consensus among traditional economists expecting rates to hold steady.

The FOMC is scheduled to meet July 28-29, 2026, with the federal funds rate currently sitting at 3.5% to 3.75%. A 25 basis point hike would bring the upper bound to 4%.

Why prediction markets are flashing yellow

Earlier in the week, CME FedWatch showed odds of a 25 basis point hike reaching as high as 46.5% before moderating. That kind of intraday swing suggests genuine uncertainty, not just noise.

Rising oil prices and persistent inflation concerns appear to be the primary catalysts pushing traders to reconsider their assumptions.
