The remains of 48 people who died during World War II were exhumed on the site of the former village of Volia Ostrovetska in the Volyn region. Search teams have completed their work at this location.
Sviatoslav Sheremeta, executive secretary of the State Interagency Commission on Commemoration and head of the Dolia Memorial and Search Center, reported this to Ukrinform.
“Ukrainian and Polish experts have completed exhumation work in the area of the former village of Volia Ostrovetska, located near the village of Rivne in the Rivne community of the Kovel district in Volyn, and have exhumed the remains of 48 people,” Sheremeta said.
As early as Monday, exhumation work will continue in the former village of Ostrivky in the Volyn region, where the remains of those who died during World War II were discovered during search operations in April of this year.
Exhumation work in the former villages of Ostrivky and Volia Ostrovetska began on July 14. On the Ukrainian side, the work is carried out by a team from the specialized institution Volyn Antiquities, while on the Polish side, it is carried out by staff from the Institute of National Remembrance of Poland and the Medical University of Wrocław. At the request of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, specialists in search operations from the Lviv Regional Council’s municipal enterprise Dolia are providing oversight and advisory support.
