During exhumation work on the site of the former village of Volia Ostrovetska in the Volyn region, the remains of 38 people who died during World War II were discovered.
Sviatoslav Sheremeta, executive secretary of the State Interagency Commission on Commemoration and head of the “Dolia” Memorial and Search Center, reported this to Ukrinform.
“Today marks the seventh day of exhumation work in the area of the former village of Volia Ostrovetska, located near the village of Rivne in the Rivne community of the Kovel District in Volyn. As of today, the remains of 38 people have been found. A team of Ukrainian and Polish experts is conducting the exhumations. Yesterday, the remains of five people were exhumed; today, seven more,” Sheremeta noted.
According to him, the recovered remains will be examined by anthropologists.
In parallel with the exhumations, search operations are continuing in the areas of Volia Ostrovetska and Ostrivky. Experts are relying on the recollections of local elders and the analysis of aerial photographs. According to Sheremeta, as of July 21, no new graves have been found.
