KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers inspect freight vehicles during the #NenzaniLaEzweni operation in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, where 11 trucks were impounded for various traffic violations, including worn-out tyres, fraudulent roadworthiness certificates and permit-related offences.
The KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) has impounded 11 trucks during an intelligence-driven operation targeting freight operators accused of flouting road safety regulations, as Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma warned that worn-out and illegally imported tyres are contributing to deadly crashes on the province's roads.
The operation, conducted under Operation NenzaniLaEzweni in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, focused on freight companies allegedly operating at night to evade law enforcement.
According to Duma, RTI officers uncovered a range of violations, including trucks operating with worn-out tyres, without transport permits, with fraudulent roadworthiness certificates, and carrying loads that exceeded legal size and weight limits.
“The operation, which began at the crack of dawn, targeted certain freight companies that deliberately operate at night to avoid detection,” Duma said.
