The eThekwini Municipality Fire Services Directorate led multidisciplinary roadblocks at the Mariannhill Toll Plaza and along the M7 in partnership with Durban Metro Police, the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), and the Road Traffic Infringement Agency.
The Road Freight Association (RFA) says various aspects of the dangerous goods legislation require frequent checks for the safety of all road users after police inspected 200 trucks on Tuesday.
The RFA made the statement after 16 trucks carrying hazardous materials were found to be in breach of safety regulations, resulting in fines totalling R102,500. A total of 201 dangerous goods vehicles were stopped and inspected within a six‑hour period.

At the Mariannhill Toll Plaza, 113 vehicles were inspected, with 10 found to be non‑compliant, resulting in fines of R45,500. Along the M7, 88 vehicles were inspected and six violations were detected, leading to fines totalling R60,000.
