KZN Transport MEC Siboniso Duma said RTI officers will be carrying out operations targeting the freight industry.
The KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma has issued a stern compliance warning to the freight industry after a truck driver was arrested for alleged speeding and 11 trucks were impounded for a string of violations on Sunday.
The department said the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) carried out an operation targeting freight vehicles on the N3 highway in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday. The operation, conducted under the KZN Transport department's Operation NenzaniLaEzweni in Pietermaritzburg, took place early on Sunday morning as it was alleged that some freight companies were operating at night to evade law enforcement.
In another incident, a truck driver was arrested in Glencoe in the afternoon after he was allegedly caught driving at 130kmh in a 80kmh zone,
In the Pietermaritzburg operation, Durban said that apart from worn-out tyres, RTI officers found other transgression including trucks operating without transport permits, with fraudulent roadworthiness certificates, and vehicles carrying loads that exceeded legal size and weight limits.
