President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala court victory has intensified political debate, with analysts warning the matter continues to weigh on his leadership, while opposition parties question accountability and transparency.
President Cyril Ramaphosa may have secured a temporary relief in the Phala Phala saga after the Western Cape High Court stopped Parliament’s Section 89 impeachment inquiry linked to the Phala Phala matter, but political analysts say the ruling does not erase the political pressure surrounding the controversy.
This is according to political analysts who spoke to IOL after the rulling was handed down on Friday.
The court granted Ramaphosa an interdict preventing the Section 89 Impeachment Committee from proceeding with public hearings until his legal challenge against the Independent Panel report is determined.
The impeachment inquiry stems from the Phala Phala scandal, which erupted in June 2022 after former State Security Agency director-general Arthur Fraser laid criminal charges against Ramaphosa.
