President Cyril Ramaphosa has been granted an interdict suspending the work of Parliament's impeachment committee.
Parliament’s impeachment process against President Cyril Ramaphosa has been brought to a halt after the Western Cape High Court granted an interdict suspending the work of the National Assembly committee tasked with investigating him over the Phala Phala matter.
The ruling means the committee cannot proceed until Ramaphosa’s legal challenge to the independent panel report that triggered the impeachment process has been determined.
The report, compiled by an independent panel chaired by former chief justice Sandile Ngcobo, concluded that Ramaphosa may have a case to answer regarding the theft of foreign currency from his Phala Phala farm.
Delivering the order on Friday, Judge André le Grange said the committee’s public impeachment proceedings must be paused while the president’s review application is before the courts.
