An administrative court in Crete has awarded a former hospital doctor €20,000 in damages for burnout, a decision healthcare workers say highlights longstanding staffing shortages and exhausting working conditions in Greece’s public health system.
Eleni Ioannidou, an internist who spent two decades at Rethymno Hospital, resigned in January 2023 after repeatedly raising concerns about understaffing, grueling schedules and excessive workloads.
She later sued the hospital, seeking compensation for 180 days of unused leave and for the moral harm caused by overwork.
After previously winning compensation for the unused leave, Ioannidou was awarded damages on June 26, by the Administrative Court of Hania.
