A court in Crete awarded a doctor €20,000 (plus interest) for moral damages, after she was forced to work overtime in a public hospital without getting paid.
It is the first time a court has ordered compensation for burnout, opening the way for similar cases of employees.
According to the case file, the doctor, who was also the director of the internal medicine clinic in a hospital in Hania, was on 24-hour duty beyond the days that is legally provided for, and sometimes even in multiple positions at the same time.
She was also denied her legal leave for two years. After her repeated complaints to the hospital’s management went unanswered, she resigned in 2022.
