Ten people, including doctors and pharmacists, face charges for alleged prescription fraud that cost the state EOPYY healthcare fund more than €400,000 over six years, authorities said Friday.
A police statement said the alleged ringleader was arrested Thursday in the Greater Athens region. He was reportedly a former candidate for Parliament. Another nine people – among them a psychiatrist, a family doctor at a state hospital and pharmacy owners or managers – face charges including belonging to a criminal organisation, fraud, forgery, privacy law breaches and money-laundering.
The crackdown followed a complaint by EOPYY officials.
Police said the suspects allegedly systematically defrauded the fund between March 2020 and April 2026 using fake documents and illegally-acquired data regarding fund beneficiaries.
