Three doctors have been arrested in the Piraeus area for allegedly defrauding the state health insurer EOPYY of more than €250,000 through the issuance of fake medical referrals.
According to the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime, a specialized Hellenic Police unit, the group is accused of operating since May 2021, carrying out 1,961 fictitious physical therapy referrals corresponding to 19,610 sessions, using 1,683 social security numbers belonging to unsuspecting insured individuals.
Those arrested include a 39-year-old physiotherapist, identified as the alleged leader of the group, and two orthopedic surgeons aged 51 and 49. The arrests took place on Wednesday during a police operation in the Piraeus area.
Authorities said the case file also implicates an employee of EOPYY and includes charges such as fraud against the state, forgery, false statements, violations of personal data legislation, and bribery-related offences.
