The municipal authority of Florina in northern Greece is offering a monthly stipend of €400 over two years for new doctors at the local general hospital, which suffers from chronic staff shortages.
The allowance, which is intended to help medics cover basic expenses such as food and rent, hopes to make positions in the public healthcare system more attractive and provide citizens with better services, Florina Mayor Vassilis Giannakis was quoted by state broadcaster ERT as saying.
The subsidy will apply to six new medical positions and follows a similar decision adopted by the council in December to provide financial support for doctors at the hospital.
Like many regional areas in Greece, Florina has struggled to recruit and retain medical staff, particularly specialists, amid broader shortages affecting public hospitals.
