The unprecedented move would have targeted cod and pollock imports
EU ambassadors on Thursday dropped the Commission’s proposed restrictions on Russian fish amid resistance from Germany, Poland and Portugal.
Last month, the EU executive included seafood in its latest sanctions against Moscow, proposing a full ban on key species such as cod and phased restrictions on other fish products.
This would have marked a first, as Brussels banned the import of Russian caviar in a 2022 sanctions package but still consumes other, less-luxurious products from its neighbour – notably cod and pollock.
Fish remained a sticking point during sanction talks, with some countries seeking to water down the proposed restrictions.
