The Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) reported that Ahad Shokohian, a protester detained during the January 2026 nationwide demonstrations, has been sentenced to death three times by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari.
Shokohian, 38, was arrested on January 15 in Pakdasht, Tehran. Following his trial, he was handed three death sentences on charges including “participation in two counts of premeditated murder,” “acting against national security pursuant to calls by hostile groups,” “assembly and collusion against national security,” and “destruction of public property with the intent to oppose the Islamic Republic regime.”
Shokohian has been held in Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj since mid-June. According to CHRI, despite receiving such a severe sentence, he is listed as the third defendant in the case. Furthermore, medical examiner reports indicate that he suffers from severe asthma and is physically incapable of strenuous activity, a detail that human rights defenders say casts serious doubt on the validity of the charges brought against him.
Throughout his detention, Shokohian was denied access to legal counsel of his choice, and his court-appointed attorney attended only a single hearing. CHRI also reported that, during the appeals phase, documentation and defense statements submitted by his chosen lawyer were disregarded.
