As Woodstock and Salt River residents celebrate the victory of a Western Cape High Court judgment which ruled that 161 occupiers at the Transnet-owned land alongside the N1 at Culemborg must vacate the property by September 30, they are now looking at authorities to provide emergency accommodation for those impacted.
The Woodstock Ratepayers Association (WRA) said they are urgently requesting Transnet as the applicant, the City of Cape Town as respondents, and the Department of Home Affairs to provide clarity on where the occupants will be housed.
The judgment was heard on Tuesday, with the court ordering that all occupants must vacate the premises, which is adjacent to the N1 highway providing daily access to the city of Cape Town for many motorists, and that the Sheriff of the Court is authorised to carry out the eviction in accordance with the court's order and may lean on the assistance of the police if necessary.
“We note that the eviction was granted without the provision of alternative accommodation, meaning that the occupiers will be rendered homeless unless they are able to secure alternative accommodation for themselves before September 30," said the WRA.
