Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head Advocate Andrea Johnson during her testimony at the parliamentary inquiry probing allegations of corruption within the criminal justice system.
Advocate Andrea Johnson, head of the Independent Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), requested a Section 27 affidavit from MP Fadiel Adams.
The decision set off a wave of concern that she may have pushed the limits of IDAC's authority, perhaps yielding to the influence of suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who had pressed IDAC to investigate Adams' claims that senior officers tampered with criminal dockets he submitted in October 2024.
This emerged on Wednesday during Johnson’s testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria, where she faced criticism for agreeing to investigate Adams’ claims without a Section 27 affidavit under the NPA Act 32 of 1998, which is one of the requirements for referring cases to IDAC.
Adams’ affidavit contained, among other allegations, claims of fraud and corruption surrounding the appointment of Dineo Mokwele, a civilian, as a brigadier in the Crime Intelligence Unit.
