A reported build in US crude and refined products inventories last week would appear to offer reassurances to oil markets at a time when Mideast supplies are facing dual threats on both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandeb. But the step-back view still shows a shrinking US inventory cushion that is raising questions about whether the country can continue serving as the global oil market's supplier of last resort.
