Cape Town's commitment to addressing homelessness: Nearly R100 million allocated for shelter and support services.
The City of Cape Town has set aside almost R100 million this financial year to expand shelter accommodation, strengthen outreach programmes and provide more support for people sleeping rough across the metro.
The 2026/27 funding package includes R87 million for homelessness interventions and support services, as well as more than R10 million for accommodation infrastructure projects as part of a broader three-year investment programme worth R62 million.
According to the City, the bulk of the funding will go towards its four Safe Spaces, after-hours interventions, the annual Winter Readiness Programme, support for non-governmental organisation (NGO) shelters, Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) opportunities and outreach services run by the Street People Programme Unit.
The City said its homelessness response focuses on providing shelter, healthcare, social services and pathways to long-term reintegration.
