Cape Town's commitment to addressing homelessness: Nearly R100 million allocated for shelter and support services.
The City of Cape Town has allocated almost R100 million in the 2026/27 financial year to strengthen support for people sleeping rough, expand shelter accommodation and boost outreach programmes aimed at helping vulnerable residents off the streets.
The funding package includes R87 million for homelessness interventions and support services, as well as more than R10 million for accommodation infrastructure projects that form part of a broader three-year investment programme worth R62 million.
According to the City, the bulk of the funding will be directed towards operations at its four Safe Spaces, after-hours interventions, the annual Winter Readiness Programme, support for non-governmental organisation (NGO) shelters, Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) opportunities and outreach services conducted by the Street People Programme Unit.
The City said its homelessness response focuses on providing shelter, healthcare, social services and pathways to long-term reintegration.
